How To Master Hair Dye At Home

Is this your first time buying boxed dye and you have no clue where to start? Have you tried countless times to master the perfect colour but it can never look like it does fresh from the salon? You are not alone and there are plenty of others out there who also are struggling. An at home do can look as great as the salon version. We have put together these tips and tricks for you with the added bonus of saving a few pennies. So, take notes and you’ll have gorgeous coloured locks in no time!

Tip One:

Make sure to keep your new colour in the same colour range as your natural hair. This can help with keeping everything looking natural and healthy. A general rule of thumb is to find a colour that is only 2-3 shades lighter or darker. Why not check out our range of natural hair dyes here.

Tip Two:

To ensure that you get an even coat, grab a friend, partner or relative to be your personal hairdresser.
Tip Three:
You test makeup in natural light to ensure you’re getting the truest colour possible, do the same for your hair colour. You don’t want to finish the process and find that your new colour is far from what you were expecting!

Tip Four:

Do a patch test prior. For this, grab a strand of hair about ¼ inch thick and dye this to see if you are getting the correct colour. You can find more information on how to do Allergy test here

Tip Five:

Pre-wash your hair. Do this preferably 2 days prior for better results. Finally, run a brush through and you are good to get started.

Tip Six:

Run some Vaseline along your hairline at the start. This keeps your hairline clean and stops your skin from getting dyed along the process. This can be difficult to remove so preventing it is key.

Tip Seven:

Style your hair into four parts. First, down the middle and then from ear to ear across the crown. This will ensure that each strand gets even coverage. The front sections that are more visible day to day need to be dyed first as they need longer processing time.

Tip Eight:

Forgo the bottle and instead use a mixing bowl and colour brush. This will give you more of a salon finish and could be why you haven’t mastered the at home dye yet.

Tip Nine:

Once the colour is in, give your hair a great wash. But, don’t pick up a bottle of shampoo. Use only water for now as you don’t want any colour to be stripped.

Tip Ten:

Use the deep conditioner that is provided to you in your boxed dye. This helps to preserve your colour and shine for a longer amount of time.
